Ever since Sheikh Sabah the First assumed leadership of Kuwait in 1756, his descendants have ruled over the country unchallenged. Some governed Kuwait for many years whilst others spent just a short time in this position:

As of January 29, 2006, the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah became the new head of state.
Before taking office, the Amir had to take the following oath in front of the National Assembly:
“I swear by Almighty God that the Constitution and the laws of the State to respect the liberties, interests and property of the people to defend and preserve the independence and territorial integrity of the country.”
The Amir is not only the head of the state, but he is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed forces. He has the power to appoint the Prime Minister, as well as relieve him from his duties. He also has the right to adopt new laws.

| The Crown Prince is the Heir Apparent to the Amir of the State of Kuwait. According to the Constitution, “The Heir Apparent shall be designated within one year at the latest from the date of the accession of the Amir. His designation shall be affected by an Amiri Order upon the nomination of the Amir and the approval of the National Assembly, which shall be approved by a majority vote of its members in a special sitting.”
Kuwait’s current Crown Prince is His Highness (HH) Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the brother of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah.HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issued a decree on January 30th, 2006, nominating HH Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as Crown Prince. The Amiri decree said that HH the Amir recommended HH Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for the Crown Prince’s post in accordance with Article 4 of the Constitution and law 4/1964 for Emirate Succession; and based on HH Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s recognized integrity and merit for the Crown Prince’s post.
HH Sheikh Nawaf has been a prominent figure who worked for the establishment and development of the State of Kuwait and was appointed for the following political post.

- Minister of Defense, January 26th, 1988
- Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, April 20th, 1991
- Deputy Chief of the National Guard, October 16th, 1994
- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, July 13th, 2003
- First Deputy Prime Minister October 16th, 2003
Proclaimed Crown Prince, in accordance with constitutional procedures, on Tuesday 8th Muharram 1427 A.H., corresponding to February 7th, 2006.
